Examining Time and Place

Scottville, Michigan
Developed as a collaboration with West Shore Community College's president, Scott Ward, this painting extends my investigation of place by cataloging 81 physical features discovered across West Shore Community College’s campuses. Each element—from laboratory equipment to architectural details—represents the disciplines that serve the school’s community college mission. Through a combination of painted realism and intentional abstraction, I transform documentary photographs into a composite image that reveals the institution’s diverse range of educational offerings.
Students, faculty, and community members will recognize familiar spaces transformed through paint, revealing new connections between the physical campus and the institution’s educational mission.
There are two special locations highlighted in the painting. One, bottom left, is located at 203 N Ferry St, Ludington, Michigan, and the other, bottom right, is State and Main Coffee Shop in Scottville, Michigan.
This painting, a commission, is in the permanent collection of West Shore Community College. It is not for sale.
