Roger Brown Home and Studio Gets Landmark Protection

In celebration of a hard-won cultural milestone, this painting and the accompanying photograph honors the life and legacy of Roger Brown — a defining voice in the Chicago Imagist movement.

The work involved deep research into Brown’s world. Those familiar with his story will find references to his famously contentious relationship with Alan Artner, the Chicago Tribune’s longtime chief art critic — a friction that shaped how Brown’s work was received and ultimately endured.

The composition offers a stylistic homage to Brown’s own visual language while grounding the work in Chicago’s living geography. Running top to bottom are the Brown, Purple, and Red Line L trains. The area depicted spans W Fullerton to the north, N Clark Street and Lincoln Park to the east, W North Avenue to the south, and Southport to the west.

3ft x 4ft. Acrylic paint on marble veneer mounted to birch panel. It sparkles!
