Soon after moving to Chicago in 1994, I went on a walkabout to find imagery for a photo project.

This image was one result.

On my next visit home to Nashville, I shared recent artworks with my Mom. As I always did. One of Mom’s best friends, Ruth Warner, had dropped by. As Ruth often would.

Ruth is a dear friend to my family. She’s an artist herself and a Cranbrook grad and mother of our dear friend Harriet. Ruth has an interest in everything so I shared my recent work with Ruth as well.

The next day Ruth stopped by again. This time very briefly and for one purpose only. To give me a postcard she had held onto for a very long time.

The postcard was “Stables” by Georgia O’Keefe from The Detroit Institute of Arts.

The pictures, in no way, reference each other. But they hold the eye similarly, in a formal way. There is a poetic relationship only Ruth might recall in the moment.

I am still to this day puzzled at how Ruth could have returned home and thought to find the postcard and make a special trip to let me keep it. Her mind’s eye and clever perception was a gift then and, I’m happy to say, are still a gift today.
