As I always did. One of Mom’s best friends, Ruth Warner, had dropped by. As Ruth often would.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRuth is a dear friend to my family. She’s an artist herself and a Cranbrook grad and mother of our dear friend Harriet. Ruth has an interest in everything so I shared my recent work with Ruth as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe next day Ruth stopped by again. This time very briefly and for one purpose only. But they hold the eye similarly, in a formal way. There is a poetic relationship only Ruth might recall in the moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am still to this day puzzled at how Ruth could have returned home and thought to find the postcard and make a special trip to let me keep it. We can discuss all options.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRazed Airplane Hangar, Fort Sheridan, Illinois, 2004\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNortheast Side and Southwest Side\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e42°13'23.1\"N 87°49'04.2”W\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLong before my current body of work, I was on the lookout for curious buildings with a clear utilitarian purpose.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small airfield was established at some point between 1952-1954 on the north side of Fort Sheridan, on the site of a rifle range. It was to be used by planes supporting anti-aircraft \u0026amp; coastal artillery training.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0711\/1062\/3550\/files\/Fort_Sheridan_Hangar-3.jpg?v=1761855646\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFort Sheridan Airfield and later known as Haley AAF (Haley Army Air Field) ran alongside Fort Sheridan Golf Course. The golf course was constructed by the Army for use by military personnel. It opened for public play in May 1994 when the Lake County Forest Preserves assumed ownership. I played the golf course many times. It was during one of these rounds I discovered the aging airplane hangar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0711\/1062\/3550\/files\/Fort_Sheridan_Hangar-2.jpg?v=1761855696\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA resident of the area recalled, “In early 1967, my father was assigned to Fifth Army at Fort Sheridan. We were assigned to quarters on the west end of Nicholson Road, which ran roughly parallel along the south side of the runway of Fort Sheridan Army Airfield. There were no fences that separated the quarters from the airfield, although there were 2 fairways \u0026amp; greens of the golf course that ran the length of the south side of the runway from east to west. For an 11-year-old boy who was enamored with airplanes, it was the best vantage place on earth. Every morning was the sound of engines running up \u0026amp; take-offs, and by the afternoon, there were airplanes \u0026amp; helicopters landing.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the Haley AAF hangar in 2004. It has since been torn down. Further distinguishing the building is its handcrafted ornamentation by prominent artist Edgar Miller. The 12 residential units front a common courtyard and are laid out on an extremely narrow site that runs perpendicular to the street. The building was commissioned by Frank Fisher, Jr., an executive of Marshall Field \u0026amp; Co.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0711\/1062\/3550\/files\/1206_State_St_Social_Post_04.jpg?v=1761857266\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn between his studies, Rebori met his wife Nannie Prendergast, niece of Robert McCormick, the publisher of The Chicago Tribune, and the couple eventually settled down in Chicago. Rebori soon became friends with other prominent local talents, such as Louis Sullivan, who in particular was a model of professional ambition for the young architect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0711\/1062\/3550\/files\/1206_State_St_Social_Post_05.jpg?v=1761857266\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"301\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1936 Edgar joins Andrew Rebori to design Frank Fisher Apartments. Fisher was a Marshall Field's \u0026amp; Company executive. It was Miller's final handmade home, and the only one he built from scratch. \"Miller and Rebori broke the mold when they designed that building\", wrote artist Larry Zgoda.
